Karnataka: Change exam schedule, spare us of poll duty

BENGALURU: A teacher from Madhugiri taluk on Saturday requested primary and secondary education minister S Suresh Kumar to tweak the exam schedule so that PU results are announced after the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is conducted.
“Students will get disheartened if they haven’t done well in PU, which will affect their performance in NEET. It will have an impact on their career too,” said Nagaraj, who’s been a teacher for 21 years. Lauding Nagaraj, the minister promised to look into the matter.

Nagaraj was one of the 38 callers to interact with the minister during the inaugural session of Samvedana — a phone-in initiative started by the government on Saturday to address problems faced by teachers, students and parents as well as seek their suggestions to improve functioning of the education department.
Suresh conducted the live session with SR Umashankar, principal secretary, primary and secondary education, Dr Reju MT, state project director for Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, and KG Jagadeesh, commissioner, DPI.
Most of the callers, who were from North Karnataka, sought the minister’s help to resolve several issues like dilapidated school buildings, lack of leaves, increased work pressure, skewed teacher-to-student ratio and lack of internet connection. Vasanth, a teacher, suggested a deduction of Rs 1,000 from their salaries every month for contribution towards the chief minister’s relief fund.
A teacher who called from Baindur in Udupi district asked Suresh to spare him of election duty, which he said had become a burden. The minister said the department is in talks with the Election Commission to find an alternative.
The callers included Somnath, who lost his son, a government school teacher, to suicide in 2012. Though his late son’s wife is still a government school teacher, Somnath alleged the elderly couple was left with no support. which tugged at the heartstrings of listeners. Suresh asked him to visit the Dharwad commissioner’s office for immediate relief. “I will speak to him,” he assured.
The minister responded to most questions with immediate solutions but was disappointed with the lack of student callers. “We will schedule the next session in such a way that more students can participate,” he said.
The department launched Shikhana Yatra, a monthly magazine on the activities and developments in the field of education.
